Tantalus Thigh Burner

RIDE THROUGH THE CITY & MOUNTAINS FOR FABULOUS VIEWS.

Tantalus is an awesome half day ride through the mountains of Oahu. Not very popular, because the roads are too narrow for tour buses, but perfect for an experienced rider. A lot of cutbacks through the rain forrest with unobstructed panoramic views of Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor and the Punchbowl Cemetery. There are plenty of hiking trails along the way also. Check out this awesome writeup about Tantalus from Dig this Jive!

DIRECTIONS: This is our most extreme bike ride in Honolulu. This 7 mile stretch of cutbacks and awesome Honolulu views of DIAMOND HEAD CRATER, PEARL HARBOR and PUNCHBOWL CEMETERY are not for the weak of heart. If you are an experienced rider, the burn is worth the view. There is city riding all the way there. From the shop, you make a right on Paoakalani Ave. Follow the bike path by making a left along the Ala Wai Canal. At the first bridge make a right on McCully St. Ride through traffic until you make a left on Wilder Ave. Make a right on Makiki St. Stay to the right when the road splits and begin ascending the mountain. From that point it is exactly three miles until you reach PU’U UALAKA’A STATE PARK. There you will find the most awesome panoramic views of Honolulu. To continue your workout keep climbing the mountain or come back into town the same way you came. Precautions: This ride is for experienced bikers only, due to very steep grades.
